The West China School of Basic Medical Sciences and Forensic Medicine, Sichuan University, emerged from the West China Union University, which itself was established in 1905 based on the model of University of Oxford, UK. The West China  Union University has a tradition of high academic achievement, and contributed greatly to significant moments in history for the region, including the Railway Project Crisis, Anti-Japanese National Salvation Movement, and the Korean War. The current West China School of Basic Medical Sciences and Forensic Medicine was founded in July, 2001 by combining the School of Basic Medical Sciences, established in 1987, and the School  of Forensic Medicine, established in 1999.
