The Department of Human Parasitology has 7 teaching staffs, including 2 professors, 2 vice professors, 2 lecturers and 1 senior technician. The discipline of human parasitology was approved the doctor station and the postdoctoral research station of parasitology in the year of 1986 and 1991, respectively.

In 1950s, the head of the department includes the famous parasitologists, Professor Guoqing Xu and Professor Zhengyi Wang with outstanding teaching and research results. Prof. Guoqing Xu was the first person who worked in the treatment and prevention of schistosomiasis in Sichuan. Prof. Zhengyi Wang gained significant achievements in hookworm behavior and were honored the National Science Awards in 1978.

From 1980s to 1990s, the scientific research group including Prof. Xingzhen Wang, Prof. Ruiyuan Feng, Prof. Rong Li, Prof. Yufang Peng, Prof. Shenghua Zhu, Prof. Zhongjin Luo, Prof. Anxiao Deng and Prof. Heping Yan led by academic leader Prof. Xiaosu Hu made great contribution to the treatment and prevention of parasitosis. The department focused mainly on the species identification and molecular biologic research of Leishmania donovani, Plasmodium vivax, Trichinella spiralis, Paragonimus, Toxoplasma gondii, Toxocara canis, Romanomermis and fly. The main achievements include: 1. For the first time to produce the monoclonal antibody towards Leishmania donovani, applying to detect the CAg of patients serum; 2. For the first time to describe the molecular biologic differences of Leishmania donovani in three endemic areas of China; 3.For the first time to discover the specific kDNA primer sequences of Leishmania donovani isolate in China and establish the detection technique using PCR; 4. Applying the PCR technique to the vaccine construction and immune protective ability research; 5. For the first time to screen the monoclonal antibody against the infection ability and the in-mosquito growth of the gametes of Plasmodium vivax; 6. Applying the nested PCR to the diagnosis of infection by plasmodium; 7.Carry out the research towards the larva migran, pathogenesis, treatment and prevention of the Toxocara canis; 8. Carry out the experimental and applied research of the elimination of Romanomermis; 9. Carry out the new species identification of Anthomyiidae in Ermei Mountain, Sichuan province. The human parasitology doctoral programme of the department is one of the three earlist doctoral programme that has been approved in the country with excellent research foundation and academic achievements.

The director of the department, Prof. Jianping Chen, doctoral supervisor, is the candidate of the academic leaders in Sichuan province, one of the Sichuan provincial health academic leaders and one of the technological experts with outstanding contribution of Sichuan province. Prof. Yajing Wang, master supervisor, is the member of Chinese Animal Society parasitology professional committee, member of the Zoology and Vector Biological Control Committee of Sichuan province. Associate Professor Yu Tian and Dali Chen and lecturer Jiao Li are the excellent teachers with doctoral degree. Qiwei Chen, lecturer, has got her PhD degree in the Queen’s University of Belfast, UK. Ms Yu Tian is the winner of the first Lixin Tang Excellent Young Teachers Awards and Top Ten Excellent Young Teachers Awards of Sichuan University.

In addition, the department has set up a laboratory for the evaluation and diagnosis of parasites and this is open up for the public for the specimen identification purpose. We welcome all talents who are interested in working with us and look forward to your visit!
