Department introduction

Department of HistologyEmbryology and Neurobiology is one of the major departments at West China School of Basic Medical Sciences &Forensic Medicine, Sichuan University. This department is formerly known as Histology and Embryology department. Considering the research focus is neurobiology, and has been offering neurobiology to the seven-year medical students since 1990, this department was approved to rename as Department of HistologyEmbryology and Neurobiology in 2001. The department is one of the departments that Basic Medical Sciences & Forensic Medicine enjoys high reputation among peer counterparts home and board. It has been an important education and research center in the field of anatomy in south-western area. The late professor Lu Zhenshan, a well-known neuroanatomist in our country has cultivated the first group of doctors majoring in neuro-histology for the former WestChinaMedicalUniversity. Subsequent to that, Ph. D. tutor Professor Wu Liangfang, Ou Kequn, and Joint Ph.D. tutor Professor Zhu Bide have led the department cultivating lots of professionals and researchers. Professor Lu Zhenshan, Wu Liangfang, Ou Kequn, Cao Gaoyuan, Xie Wen, Bao Tianran, Li Yonghong, Zhang Wei served as the department head successively. Professor Zhou Xue is the current department head. Professor Wang Tinghua joined us in 2004, after that we gradually built a new generation of teaching and researching group including professor Wang Tinghua, Qi Jianguo, Zhou Xue, Wang Lei, Yang Guizhi, associate professor Li Yonghong, Pen Jin and several lecturers as well as several joint professors.  Now we work confidently and industriously to achieve the goal of making our department first class teaching and research base of China.



The department has 12 teachers, including 4 professors, 2 associate professors, 1 associate researcher, 4 lecturers, 1 joint professor, as well as 1 staff. Nine of them have PhD.


Teaching work

"Histology and embryology" is an important subject of basic medicine and is one of the core basic courses for medical students."Histology" is a morphological course, which is a scientific study of the microstructure of normal human body and its function relationship, which includes cells, basic tissues, organs and systems. Histology is closely related to other basic and clinical medicine courses such as physiology, pathology, internal science, obstetrics and gynecology, tissue engineering, etc. Along with the continuously development of life sciences, histology constantly enriches and updates the content and extension, and mutually penetrate with contemporary life sciences, and becomes increasingly close. Some important topics in medical research, such as cell inheritance and mutation, proliferation and differentiation, apoptosis and aging, are closely related to histology. Therefore, medical students through the histological study of theoretical knowledge and tissue slice observation, systematically master the micro-structure of the human body in order to get a good morphology basis for learning other basic and clinical medicine and related scientific research. Human body originated from a fertilized ovum which is formed by the combination of the men's sperm and the female's ovum. The fertilized ovum is composed of paternal genetic information and maternal genetic information fusion to produce diploid individual cells. The fertilized ovum develops into a mature fetus through complex biological processes such as proliferation, differentiation, organ building, evolutionary transposition, and function building. The process of the human body is called an individual occurrence. Embryology is the scientific study of human embryonic development and its mechanism. The normal occurrence of the human body, if disturbed by internal and external factors, can cause developmental abnormalities, resulting in various congenital anomalies. In order to obtain better learning, analysis and understanding of each system organs physiological function and pathological process, and to learn further follow-up medical foundation course and clinical course, medical students have to master the basic knowledge of histology and embryology.


"Neurobiology of medicine" is an emerging interdisciplinary subject of the intersection of medicine and neurobiology. It is based on the application of biological methods and techniques to study the basic and clinical diagnosis and treatment of major nervous system diseases. The basic research involved neurons and glial activity, synaptic information transmission, neural growth and apoptosis. Clinical research mainly involves in the nervous system disease: brain, spinal cord injury, cerebrovascular disease and neural degenerative diseases, immunity and nerve endocrine disorders, anxiety and depression and schizophrenia.



Major research & Achievement

Their research focuses on neurobiology, especially in the fields of spinal cord injury and repair, neurodegeneration, neuroendocrinology and neuroimmunology. This department successively obtained the national natural science project fund for 18 times, 4 times doctoral fund of national education committee, the ministry of education international cooperation fund item twice, 85 research project once, CMB fund 5 times, 10 times provincial funds, 13 times colleges funds, and many cooperation projects. The fund add up to more than 4 million yuan, as well as 17.5 thousands US dollar from oversea. Published more than 200 research papers, edited and published 14 influential academic monographs. Won the fourth prize in the science and technology progress of Sichuan provincial department of health in 1986, won the third prize in the science and technology progress of Sichuan province in 1996, won the third prize of Chengdu science and technology progress in 1996, and won the third prize in the science and technology progress of Sichuan province in 1999.


Talent cultivation

This Department offers master's degree and doctoral degree programs, and has a postdoctoral research station. Currently, we have one Ph.D. tutor, 3 master tutors. We admit master and Ph.D. students every year. There are more than 70 masters of medicine graduates and more than 20 doctorate graduates already.

We hope to bring in academic leaders under the age of 45 with the title of associate professor or above, who come from foreign famous universities. We also welcome young doctors under the age of 35 who graduated from world-class universities.
